Blown Recycled Glass
by Nina Westman, Sweden

Nina’s work is polemical and conceptual iconography in glass; the artist is driven by a desire to make social issues beautiful. This drive infuses every element of her work; from relying on recycled cullet to working in a women-run hot shop.

The artist’s signature series of functional votives in the form of a hybrid breast and bomb, beautifully represents her fearless embrace of gender equality and social justice issues. Her work is not proposing equality, it is an appropriate and unapologetic assertion of the necessity of equality.

As a member of BOOM! A collective of Swedish women glassblowers, she has helped to create a feminist space for glass making, including building a mobile glass hot shop that the group takes on the road to bring glass experience to kids in communities of need.
