Vase #597 by Wayne Husted for the Blenko Glass Co.

#597 in Tangerine; triangular vase covered with applied irregular disks. This design is perhaps the most complex of Husted's iconic forms with the many randomly applied "blobs" clearly evoking the hand-made nature of the glass.

This is an ideal example of how Husted rose to the challenge of producing cutting edge free-hand glass designs in a production environment. No other Blenko design had so many applied pieces; such labor intensive details were generally cost prohibitive, yet here by applying the details randomly, by design, much of the cost is offset.

Husted was by far the most innovative designer at Blenko and this vase is a great example of his bravado. Today we are familiar with and respect concepts like deconstructivism, primitivism and even the abject, but in 1959 this design was quite radical.

Designed in 1959, made for 2 years only. Signed
