Riotously Etched and Glazed Ceramics
by Frances Priest, Scotland

Richly patterned vessels bursting with color; this is the heart of Frances’ work. Her intricate interlocking and overlapping designs are etched into the leather hard clay and then delicately colored. Both the patterns and the colors are inspired by a combination of history and personal experiences. Frances’ most well developed series reinterprets the patterns found in the famous book “The Grammar of Ornament”, Owen Jones’ seminal work from 1856 documenting patterns from around the world. The book, like Frances’ work, is a testament to our obsession with patterns and making beautiful things.
